ABSTRACT: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is first identified during pregnancy. Although it is a transient condition, it predisposes the mother and baby to developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus later on in life. This study aims to explore and describe the perceptions of professional nurses, midwives and women with history of GDM concerning its nursing management. Nurses and midwives’ understanding of evidence-based practice will be ascertained. It will be a qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual study conducted at the 37 Military Hospital, Ghana. The research population will be professional nurses and midwives working at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department and women with a history of GDM who attended antenatal clinic and delivered at the same Hospital.

The study will be conducted in three (3) phases; semi-structured individual interviews, integrative literature review and development of a best practice guideline for the nursing management of GDM. Data analysis will be done. This guideline will then be presented to an expert panel for review.
